Racism on Twitch

On last night’s stream we had a person follow my channel and played a few rounds of Jackbox with us. The answers they submitted leaned on the inappropriate side (all things considered) but was still fine by me- they weren’t racist, political or homophobic. They weren’t really being interactive with the chat despite me trying to have a conversation with them, and they were generally negative when the game didn’t go their way.

At this point I was listening to K-Pop over the stream and was dancing to each track. When this person didn’t win the round they left like a sore loser with the message “I fucking hate Anime.”

It’s always hilarious to me when people assume one genre over another, let alone assume one language over another on top of that. First thing’s first: It wasn’t even worth mentioning in the first place! When the person said “I fucking hate Anime”, I immediately understood what they were trying to get at. At least be knowledgable before trying to insult something. Insight before insult is always better than Ignorance before insult.

I’ve had new people hop into the stream before and ask “Is this Japanese music?” or “Is this Kpop” before telling me it’s not their thing- I respect that. Some people still hang out throughout the stream and have a great time with the rest of us. Some of them even turning a leaf with comments such as “I’m actually enjoying this song” or “I can dig this.”

The Twitch viewer ‘Bluejoltz’ has unfollowed me at some point between my stream last night and this post. Good. I don’t need that bullshit on my stream. gtfo.

Despite changing my Jackbox settings to filter out some of the hate (Twitch account required to play), unfortunately hate will always find a way. Racism and ignorance is everywhere. I’m not one to be triggered easily, and still not. Trying to insult a Chinese person by misclassifying Korean music as Japanese animation doesn’t really work. It makes you look like an uneducated idiot- something I don’t doubt you’re used to being called.

This was one small incident that I experienced last night as an Asian. On the other hand, Black People have been experiencing way more throughout their decades. Most cases come more severe, and even often fatal. We need to stop crimes against the Black community, and fight hate with love.

#BlackLivesMatter

This statement always did and always will remain true. I’m fortunate enough to grow up in Toronto, Canada where we live in a cultural mosaic. I’m fortunate to have parents who have been open-minded and made sure my upbringing was not only positive to myself, but positive towards the people I will be interacting with in the future. I’m fortunate to have the friends I have, and their influences along with it.

Some people, some countries aren’t as fortunate.

My platform may not be as big as my peers and I’m still learning how to use it the way it’s meant to be used in these trying times…

I am neither white nor black.
I am not a brand or a public figure.
But I am proud of who I am.
And I am proud of who you are.
I know where I’ve been standing.
And I stand with you.
Unite.
